Morning departure for Chicago, with group transportation to the Hilton Suites Hotel, conveniently located just off Michigan Avenue near Bloomingdale's. Late afternoon we gather for a preview of Show Boat, given by a member of the Lyric Opera speaker's bureau. Then a Welcome Dinner together at the hotel, followed by our first performance, the ground-breaking masterpiece of American Musical Theater, Jerome Kern's Show Boat. With book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, this show premiered in 1927 and forever changed the American musical. The cast includes Nathan Gunn as Ravenal, Ashley Brown as Magnolia, Alyson Cambridge as Julie and Morris Robinson as Joe. John DeMain conducts.

A matinee performance today of Verdi's spectacular Aida, with Salvadore Licitra, Hui He, and Anna Smirnova. Renato Palumbo conducts. In Italian with English titles. The evening is free.

This morning we meet in the hotel for breakfast and our second opera preview, this time Rinaldo, the first opera Handel wrote for London, and the work that made him the king of opera in England for decades. The balance of the day is free, perhaps for a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago to see its new Modern Wing. Tonight's outstanding cast for Rinaldo includes countertenor David Daniels, Elza van den Heever, and Luca Pisaroni as Argante, the role that brought Samuel Ramey to stardom. Conductor is Harry Bicket. In Italian with English titles.
